Step 1: Cut your pieces. For my example, I will be making a 4 ¼"x8 ½" flying geese block. I'll use my flying geese to create a border on a large quilt I am currently working on. Since I am supposed to add ½" to each dimension for my pieces to cut, I will be cutting the following per block: 1- 4 ¾"x9" rectangle. 2- 4 ¾" squares.

Piecing a border from multiple pieces is a lot more tricky than just piecing a plain fabric border with fabric strips and I admit - this is one of my least favorite things to piece because it has.

Make 4 No-Waste Flying Geese. Cut one large square for the peaked fabric and four small squares for triangle fabric as determined using the instructions above. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of the four small squares. Place two small squares on the large square, right sides together and small squares in.

Start by cutting two 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" white rectangles for each block. Then cut four 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares for each block. Take one of the white rectangles and lay a black square on top, right sides together and matching the raw edges. Stitch diagonally across the black square and carefully press back. Do the same for the other side.

The flying geese strip on the fabric is 2″ wide and each of the flying geese are 1″ high, so that makes it perfect for sewing into different block designs. Here are a couple of different ones: Split rail fence block using the flying geese fabric. Double monkey wrench block using the flying geese fabrics.

Cut the Flying Geese square 1 1/4″ larger than the finished length of your desired block. Cut the four smaller Sky squares 7/8″ larger than the finished width of your desired block. Here are measurement examples of two common size blocks I use: 4″ x 8″ Flying Geese block: 9.5″ large square and four 5″ smaller squares.
